May 31, 2002, Newsletter Issue #92: Goethe`s Faust

Tip of the Week

The drama starts with a prologue in heaven, in which Mephistopheles obtains permission to try to effect the ruin of the soul of Faust. The play itself opens with a soliloquy by Faust, who is disillusioned with the world. After Mephistopheles has presented himself, Faust promises to become his slave if he should express delight at any situation procured for him by the devil. Mephistopheles attempts to satisfy Faust, culminating in the incident of Gretchen. Faust seduces Gretchen and brings about her death. At the end of Pt. I, he is left remorseful and dissatisfied.
