February 14, 2003, Newsletter Issue #130: The Berlin Bear

Tip of the Week

Bear and wall found on today`s coat-of-arms were introduced in 1875. Hence, it is unlikely that the city`s name has anything to do with bears. A slavic origin is equally doubtful, as similar place and family names existed in Germany prior to the Slavic settlement of Berlin, which began around the year 650. Berlin probably means `firm place` - such as an island surrounded by swamps or shallow water.
The Berlin Bear, either as a keyring, sticker or plush toy, makes a great souvenir.
