The Cold War (Kalter Krieg)
The Cold War (Kalter Krieg) http://www.kalter-krieg.de.vu
High school students set up this fascinating web page as a part of their diplomas. The site provides a comprehensive summary of the beginning, duration and end of the Cold War. Topics such as the war conferences, the Teheran Conference, the Yalta Conference, and the Potsdam conference at the end of World War II are all described in detail. The reasons for the Cold War, the idea of the Marshall Plan and the division of Germany into two countries are analyzed. You will get an overview of the Korean war, the Warsaw Pact, the `Blockade`, and the history of the Berlin Wall. As to the end of the Cold War, you will find a description of German politician Willy Brandt's ‘Ostpolitik' and Gorbatchew's reform politics. I was overwhelmed by both the quality and quantity of historical information found on this page.

Rise of Nazi Germany
By the 1920's, many Germans were dissatisfied with the depression and thus with the current government, the Weimar Republic. Germans bitterly resented the Versailles Treaty, which blamed their country for World War I. Adolf Hitler took advantage of German anger about this treaty, which stipulated that Germany pay large sums of money (Reparationskosten) to the victors. - These payments, Hitler claimed, were unfair and had led to the current deterioration in Germany's economy. He also made use of propaganda spreading a message of hatred: He blamed Jews for Germany´s troubles. Germany had not lost the war, he said. Rather, Jews and other “traitors” had "stabbed Germany in the back" in 1918. He furthermore claimed that Germans belonged to a superior "Aryan" race with a need of more “Lebensraum” (an area to settle and live in) as a natural right. His cleverly organized political party - the National Socialist German Workers´ Party (NSDAP) or Nazis - helped him win power. Impoverished and confused, many Germans turned to Hitler as a strong leader (Fuehrer) with answers to their problems.

Germanische Goetterverehrung

The Industrialization of Prussia
An important factor in the industrialization of Prussia was the establishment of a strong military and administrative apparatus. The kings and civil servants of Prussia knew, however, that the control of technology and commercial activity were at least equally important in the long run. Through investments in education, science, immigration and technology transfer, the state attempted to make Prussia commercially successful. Success was greatest when the interests of the ruling class coincided with the efforts of the citizens. By the end of the 19th century, Prussia had at its disposal the most important and most modern industrial areas of Europe - the Ruhr region, Berlin and Silesia.

Total Control
In 1933, Hitler became chancellor, or head, of the German government. Within two years, he ended democratic government. He crushed all rivals and created a totalitarian state under one party, the NSDAP. Citizens had to obey the government without question. Criticism of the government was not permitted. The government controlled the press, schools, and religion. Hitler´s aids, the SA and SS, ensured that anybody openly voicing disapprovement with the government, its leader or its politics would silently "disappear". By brainwashing both adults and children, they turned Germany into a nation of traitors. Children would often give up their own parents.
