Berlin became the spotlight of global politics when the Soviet Union under Stalin imposed the "Blockade" on the town. It lasted from June 24, 1948 to May 12, 1949. All land, rail and water routes to the city were blocked. The Western Allies organized an airlift with 'raisin bombers' sending in essential supplies to the besieged city. After the end of the Blockade, the city was divided into an eastern and western zone.
