The transformation from mercantilism to free enterprise had important consequences for economic and technological development in Prussia. State-supervised workshops were replaced by industrial forms of production, thanks to the reforms made by an authoritarian-centralist government. Responsibility for the commercial success of an enterprise was transferred from the state to the citizens. Ultimately, industrialization also brought with it a change in the character of society. New social classes arose, which, to some extent, broke away from the Prussia of the aristocracy and the military.
