One of the main differences between the school systems mentioned above is the emphasis placed on the acquisition of foreign languages in German schools. English is compulsory (starting at age 10 or 11), French is usually the second foreign language (starting at age 12), plus there is an option to take up Spanish, Latin or even Greek (usually between the ages 12 and 14).
