March 23, 2001, Newsletter Issue #30: Ludwig II and Richard Wagner

Tip of the Week

King Ludwig II of Bavaria (1845 - 1886) remains a fascinating figure to this day. Each year, his palaces and castles cast a spell on hundreds of thousands of visitors. It is less well known that the builder of fairy-tale castles was also a pacifist, a generous patron, a technical visionary, and one of the first environmentalists. Ludwig II never forgave the people of Munich for giving his `beloved friend` Wagner the cold shoulder and shunned the `detested, accursed city` whenever he could. It seems an ironic twist of fate that Ludwig`s final resting place is at St. Michael`s Church in Munich. Find out more about Ludwig in my history tip section at www.german-tips.com.
