If you are on a tight budget you will find it useful to employ the services of a "Mitwohnzentrale" (a private letting agency). The agency will provide you with either a room in a private house or a complete apartment. The "Mitwohnzentralen" always have large numbers of short-term lets available. The apartments in particular can be extraordinarily good value, particularly for families or for stays of upwards of two weeks. They will cost a fraction of the price of even the cheapest hotels. You will find lists of private letting agencies in the service section of the local Berlin phone directory.
