April 5, 2002, Newsletter Issue #84: Going abroad to Germany

Tip of the Week

As to gifts: how about a book about your town/state/area? Most Germans can read English. Also always a good idea: funny T-Shirts, Hershey candy, peanut butter, Reese`s peanut butter cups, stickers or Barbie dolls (if your hosts have kids), flower seeds (if it is something exotic from your state), or a small flag.
As to clothes: generally, clothes are not expensive in Germany. I advise to travel light and add items there.
The climate depends on where in Germany you are going. Generally, the south tends to be warmer than the north, the west warmer than the east. It is advisable to bring a light jacket and a sweater in any case, as summer evenings can be chilly, despite temperatures ranging between 60 and 80 degrees F during the day.
