The interdisciplinary character of a lot of research carried out by the MPS thus complements the work of the universities and other scientific institutions in Germany. The present 78 research facilities of the MPS are organized in three sections: the Chemistry, Physics and Technology Section, the Biology and Medicine Section, and the Humanities Section. The MPS is funded by donations, and federal and state subsidies. It is not a government institution, but an incorporated association. Its registered seat is in Berlin, its Administrative Headquarters are in Munich.
