August 22, 2003, Newsletter Issue #154: The Einwohnermeldeamt

Tip of the Week

But there is more to it: you need to "un-register" at the "Einwohnermeldeamt", once you change addresses or leave the country. Why is this important? It is a requirement to apply for a renewed German/EU passport. So what happens if you have already moved abroad and forgot? In order to "unregister" with the Einwohnermeldeamt, you would need to go there in person and have them "un-register" you, giving you an "Abmeldebescheinigung". This document costs about 4 Euros. If you cannot go there yourself, have someone else collect this for you. This person needs to carry your authorization, stating why he/she is entitled to collect the document. Be sure to mention the word "Abmeldebescheinigung" (which is the name of the "unregistering" document) in your authorization.
