Well into the 18th century, Brandenburg-Prussia was not quite taken seriously by the other European nations. The concept of the "Brandenburg sand-bowl" referred to the poverty and backwardness of this state. But in the two hundred years after the first royal coronation in 1701, Prussia developed with growing momentum to become a major continental power, which only partially merged into the new German empire.
