What is the Berlin Wall?
The Berlin Wall was built by the East Germans in 1961. They called it an “antifascist wall” . Its aim was “to shelter” their people from undue western influences. It was heavily guarded by armed GDR-soldiers and police, and equipped with barbed wire, watchtowers, mines and dogs. At least 80 people died attempting to cross from East to West Berlin between 1961 and 1989. By now, most of the wall has been torn down, and only a few small segments remain as memorials (Denkmaeler).
