April 6, 2001, Newsletter Issue #32: Easter Traditions in Germany

Tip of the Week

Easter is one of Germany`s most important holidays. All Christians celebrate the resurrection of Christ from the grave. Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, which adds to four free days including the Easter weekend. School kids get Easter holidays, thus making this time of the year a busy season. If you are traveling in Germany at the time expect a lot of traffic. In a lot of German households, there is Spring cleaning. Easter decorations are brought into the home (e.g. budding twigs, daffodils, or wheat sprouts) and baskets with eggs and candy are set up. In many houses you also find Easter trees, which are decorated with eggs, bows and toys. After a big Easter meal on Sunday, there is usually an Easter egg hunt for the children.
