The Einwohnermeldeamt will enter your information, such as date of birth, citizenship and address into a computer. Youy need to bring your ID, a passport and a copy of your apartment lease. Better still, submit copies of everything. Once your information is stored, you will get a slip with your address. Save this slip. If you move again, you will need to bring it back to the Einwohnermeldeamt. It is also proof that you have already registered.

The Einwohnermeldeamt is usually very crowded. Make sure you take something to read to pass the time. Also, make sure that you have a copy of your apartment lease with you.

The standard format for CVs and resumes in Germany is A4, but if you submit the US-format (standard BIG unligned sheet) it probably would not matter much. Tip: it is no longer necessary to submit a handwritten CV, unless the company requests it. Computer typing makes a better impression.

Everybody who moves to Germany must register their new address with the Einwohnermeldeamt. It is advisable to do this within 6 days of having moved. Note: you may have to pay a fine if you do not register promptly. Find the Einwohnermeldeamt for your district in your local telephone directory. This will also tell you what the office hours are.

Although you should register with the Einwohnermeldeamt within 6 days of having moved, it is not a big deal if you have a vaild reason (for example, you are a foreigner and you did not know). In that case, be very polite, so they will take pity on you, and you will not get fined.

So what needs to be in a CV and resume??
1. Information content - in addition to CV and resume:
a) copies of all your school data/reports - special classes, high school grades (photocopies!), college info (photocopies of individual classes taken - if applicable to prospective job), in ANY case a copy of your degree(s). Perhaps: an example of your work.
I used to translate movie scripts, so I would occasionally send them a sample. Worked well.
b) a business card
c) copies of letters of recommendation if you have them
2. ---- CV can be in the form of a data sheet, does not have to be in full sentences. Should be between 1 -2 pages long.
example:
1963 born in such and such
1970-75 school such and such
(and so on)
presently employed at ------ so and so - END.
CV MUST BE SIGNED and DATED!!!
3. -- Resume: as brief as possible, but including 'highlights' (i.e. qualifications) as to why you think you are suitable for the position offered. Does not need to be handwritten, unless stated. Must not exceed a page. Use Times New Roman 12, if not possible 11. State your number of enclosures at the bottom. Clip a recent photo on right upper corner - do not glue, use paper clip. Write your name and address on back of photo. Style: polite, but to the point. Do not grovel. State that you are looking forward to a job interview and thank them for their time. Sign and date. Is your address either in the header or footer? Have you included your phone number/e-mail address?
4. overall: include a big self-addressed envelope with stamps or international money order, so that they will return your documents. Some companies are notoriously bad about returning such things.
