March 15, 2002, Newsletter Issue #81: Froehliche Ostern!

Tip of the Week

Good Friday and Easter Monday are public holidays, which add up to four free days, including the Easter weekend. All schools and universities are closed for the "Osterferien," too, thus making this time of the year a busy season. Lots of Germans spend part of this holiday housecleaning ("Fruehjahrsputz"). Easter decorations, such as budding twigs, daffodils, or wheat sprouts, are common. Baskets full of eggs and candy are set up. Many living rooms feature Easter trees decorated with eggs, bows and toys. After a big lunch on Sunday, there is usually an Easter egg hunt ("Eiersuchen") for children.
