Cafe Swing, located next to concert hall and disco Metropol, has been around forever (at least for 20 years!) It was fully renovated in 1998, but the basic atmosphere has not changed. Expect to find an "in-crowd" and prices in the midrange. If you are lucky you might catch a performance or a band, there, too. It gets very crowded on weekends, particularly if there are concerts at the Loft or Metropol across the street. The best time to check in is before midnight. You can also sit outside and watch the busy streetlife of the Schoeneberg district, or go next door to buy delicious Turkish food to go. This cafe is a Berlin institution (Nollendorfplatz 3 - 4, subway stop: Nollendorfplatz, open daily 9 a.m. - 4 a.m.). If you are really hungry you should walk over to Rani, located on Winterfeldtplatz near Nollendorfplatz (takes about 5 minutes). Rani is not only one of the best Indian restaurants in town, but also a great place to meet people, and to sample freshly squeezed juices or vegetarian dishes. The food is cheap & plentiful, the atmosphere is friendly, even if it is crowded. Highly recommended (Goltzstrasse 32, subway: Nollendorfplatz or Eisenacher Strasse, open daily 9 a.m. - 1 a.m).
