East Germany, or formally the Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR, GDR), was the name given to half of Germany after World War II (1949). It was located in central Europe, bordering on the north to the Baltic Sea, on the east to Poland, on the south to the Czech Republic, and on the south and west to the former West Germany (Bundesrepublik Deutschland, BRD, FDR). It was governed by a single party, the SED (Sozialistische Einheitspartei Deutschland) and leaned towards the Soviet Union for political guidance, science and economic exchanges of all kinds. East Germany ceased to exist when it was reunified with the Bundesrepublik Deutschland on October 3, 1990.
